The dB vs. dBA weighting is done internally, within the sound sensor itself, not on-board the NXT. Sending back a good frequency spectrum, (even if the sound sensor could do it), over the NXT I2C link would be slooooow...

Brian Davis made a similar comment on thenxtstep. He reported there that he can use this technique to recognize pure tones, but not not tones emitted by the speakers of the NXT and the RCX. See his comment for more details.

I have not yet tried this, but I definitely plan to.

It occurs to me that if the senor can recignise both dBs and dBAs that it must most be aware of the frequency of the sound. Are the weighting for dBA done internally in the sensor or is the nxt doing the calculations.

I have not seen anything in the development kits that suggests that the sound sensor can be used to recognize tones. And as I wrote in the article, the sampling rate of the NXT's sound sensor, at least with NXT-G, is too slow to allow recognition of tones by sampling the amplitude.

This notion of tone recognition is news to me. And the Lego blog entry you link to does state it has that ability. Anything in the development kits hint how to tap this feature?
