The bricked brick that keeps clickin’!

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

What is it with the click of death these days? You may remember the Iomega click of death fiasco, or more recently, tossing iPods off third floor balconies after clicking drove some folks insane. Well, our new, beloved NXT is reported to be suffering from its own click syndrome.

The NXT brick is said to come with firmware version 1.01 out of the box (I can confirm tonight). The included CD contains version 1.03. When users have attempted to download the newer firmware version to their NXT bricks, some have experienced failure and an endless clicking noise. Now from what I read, the clicking is normal during the download process, but the problem is that it doesn’t stop. Users are then left with a bricked brick.

Some attribute it to USB or Bluetooth issues. Some even claim to have unbricked their NXTs. It looks like a sporadic issue and LEGO is said to be aware of it. Not sure if I have the guts to upgrade before the issue is officially resolved… Will keep you posted.
